Navigating TAFE: A Guide for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in TAFE
The Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing has produced a DVD for the VET sector that provides information to potential students who are deaf and hard of hearing who intend to enrol in TAFE. The DVD includes a section for VET teachers who may have a deaf and hard of hearing student in their class and also a simulated audio clip of varying degrees of hearing loss.
This resource was funded by the Office of Training and Tertiary Education within the Victorian Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (DIIRD). A summary of the DVD follows:
Natalie, a deaf student, has just enrolled at TAFE, and isn’t sure what to expect. What will TAFE be like? How will she manage studying? What services are available? How will she communicate with the teachers?
Natalie talks to students and staff at TAFE to answer these and other questions. The DVD includes short film clips on the following areas:
1. New to TAFE
2. Support Services
3. Disability Standards in Education
4. The Classroom
5. About Deafness (for teachers)
A number of PDF documents are included with more detailed information on these topics. They can be accessed by inserting the DVD in a computer.
All dialogue is accessible in Auslan, spoken English, and English subtitles.
Duration: 23 minutes
This DVD has been distributed to all Disability Liaisonn Officer's in the Victorian TAFE system, as well as to secondary schools in Victoria.
