Finding and Keeping UDL Champions: Introducing Change
In 2002, the Western Institute, TAFE NSW adopted as policy the use of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for learning materials developed and produced within the Institute. Instrumental to implementing this policy change were UDL champions working in key teaching and learning positions in various areas of the Institute. The Teacher Consultants for students with disabilities drove the introduction and discussion of UDL.
In 2008, new UDL Champions, supported by the Teacher Consultants, have actioned further change in Institute policy regarding the design of classroom layout, student furniture and technology standards, including assistive software and general student software.
This paper will address the key role of UDL Champions in introducing change, identify successful strategies and discuss challenges encountered along the way by the Teacher Consultants.
