Equity Quality Assisted Learning: EQAL
The impact of the Education Standards may not be felt immediately, however from a risk management perspective Tertiary providers need to address access for students with disabilities or medical conditions on several levels.
The fundamental premise for participation should be that appropriate supports to which a student is entitled, are communicated and provided, in an effective and timely manner.
This paper will focus on the development and application of Equity Quality Assisted Learning ‘EQAL’ a student centric communication tool. Essentially EQAL is as a database, communication tool and assessment organiser. EQAL functions like a passport with a system of visas providing entry (access) around the University to different types of resources and supports. Unlike the hardcopy learning plan systems EQAL’s primary attribute is that it is web based allowing access by practitioners and students at any time and any place.
Since its implementation in first semester of 2007 Equity as well has enrolled over 500 students on the database for their supports and sent out over 150 EQAL plans. Some of the resulting benefits of using EQAL include: Clear and concise documentation on agreed supports and accommodations, greater student independence, timely communications of supports and accommodations, enhanced communication between those charged with the tasks of delivering academic services and those who support students with disabilities.
